BOM

The Bill of Materials is divided into two sections: the eBOM (engineering Bill of Materials) and the mBOM (manufacturing Bill of Materials). Either section can be minimized using the minimize arrows clip0072, increasing the portion of the screen the other section uses. Performing a BOM Comparison (comparing the eBOM to the mBOM) can easily be performed in Assembly Planner.

The mBOM can be edited in Assembly Planner, but the eBOM is read-only and cannot be edited. Additionally, you can copy portions of the eBOM and paste them into the mBOM.

eBOM & mBOM

eBOM & mBOM

The fields displayed on both the eBOM and mBOM side of this tab by default are:

Part Number: Unique ID of the child item

Rev: Revision of the child item used in this BOM

Name: Name of the child item

Description: Description of the child item

MFG Status: Engineering Status of the child item (Released or WIP). This depends on open ECOs and/or whether the items have been checked in or out.

Type: Item type - typically defined by PDM or ERP systems

Qty: Quantity of the item used within the BOM

From Date: Date on which the item becomes effective within the BOM

To Date: Date on which the item is no longer effective within the BOM

Unit Serial Start: Order’s Unit Serial Number on which the item will become effective within the BOM.

Unit Serial End: Order’s Unit Serial Number on which the item is no longer effective within the BOM.

ConsWorkbenchIsTimeOut: Check box indicating whether the BOM is still active based on From and To dates.

ComponentFindNo (eBOM only): This field is typically defined by the PDM system.

OpSeq# (mBOM only): This field associates the item to the process which uses/consumes it.

TimedOut (mBOM only): This can be used in conjunction with From and To Dates.

BOM Diff. Flag: Correlates to the color highlighting of the item's row and indicates the differences between the eBOM and mBOM. See BOM Comparison for details.

Editing in mBOM Tab

While there is no editing allowed in the eBOM tab, you can edit within the mBOM tab. Fields that may not be edited while in this view are marked with the lock symbol clip0074. These fields are read-only. All other fields may be edited by clicking within the desired cell once. The cell should become active and editable. In some cases, there are finite choices and drop downs will appear rather than empty cells for text to be entered. In cases where a date must be chosen, a calendar will appear if the drop down arrow is clicked. Otherwise, you can enter numbers for the date directly. In this example, the name of the LOS has been changed, and the drop down arrow is shown in the line type column.

The fields shown in this sheet are changeable by right clicking and using the Customize View tool. Also, clicking on the column head will sort the sheet by that column by ascending/alphabetical order on one click, and descending order on two clicks.

Mass Edit

In order to more efficiently edit the mBOM, the Mass Edit view can be chosen by right clicking in the mBOM sheet and clicking on Mass Edit. Note: This will only open the top level within the BOM tab and not the children underneath. In order to edit the children with Mass Editor, the parent of the children must be selected.

This view supports more functions for speeding up the process of editing, such as dragging values to cover multiple cells. It also shows editable fields using color-coded cells rather than the lock on the title. Once all necessary changes have been made, clicking the OK button will save changes, but clicking the Close button will discard them.

Also, just as with the mBOM tab, the fields shown in this sheet are changeable by right clicking and using the Customize View tool. Also, clicking on the column head will sort the sheet by that column by ascending/alphabetical order on one click, and descending order on two clicks.

eBOM Right Click Menu

Right-clicking in the eBOM area provides three options:

Copy: Copies a component, which can be pasted in the mBOM.

Open Item (or Component): Opens the selected component.

Properties: Opens the properties window for the selected component. The Properties window shows the custom fields pertaining to the BOM and Item. If the Properties are opened from the eBOM side, this window will be view-only. To modify any of the fields for a particular item, you must open the Properties from the mBOM side.

Customize View: Allows you to use the Customize View tool to change the hidden/shown columns and their order.

mBOM Right Click Menu

Right-clicking in the mBOM area provides several options:

Cut: This feature is not yet enabled. If you wish to remove an item from the BOM, use the Delete selection.

Copy: This standard edit function makes a copy of an item from the BOM.

Check Out and Check in Options: Refer to Check Out and Check In for all relevant menu options. Note: You must have the parent component in the Routing Search List checked out to for these options to be enabled.

Paste as a Sibling: Pastes the copied component at the highest level as other components in the mBOM (the item will be a sibling to the existing items).

Paste as a Child: Inserts the component one level underneath the item you have right-clicked.

Insert as Sibling: Inserts New, Existing, Text, or Resource items at the highest level as other components in the mBOM (the item will be a sibling to the existing child items). A new item can be added by providing its description. For existing, text, or resource items, search for the item and then insert it.

Add as a Child: Adds a component one level lower. As with Insert, a new, existing, text, or resource item can be added. Note: You must check out the parent component in the mBOM before you can add a component as a child to it.

Properties: Opens the properties window for the selected component. This Properties window allows modification of custom fields pertaining to the BOM and Item. In order to modify the item's custom fields, the child item MUST be checked out.

Open Item: Opens the selected item.

Mass Edit (or View) Item: The Mass Edit/View Item sheet brings both BOM and Item custom fields into one sheet or view for editing all child items of the opened parent item. The Mass Edit menu is enabled only if the parent item is checked out. In order to edit the item properties of the children, make sure that the child items are checked out. If nothing is checked out, this selection will be displayed as Mass View.

Customize View: Allows you to use the Customize View tool to change the hidden/shown columns and their order.
